In our contemporary 21st century era of a radically changing global order, where the post-war ideals of an open and communal Europe are under extreme stress from the crises of Brexit, closed borders, and rising socialand political paranoia & polarization, the | exchange transports us back to the last major crisis of European freedom: the creation of the Berlin Wall and the profound ideological and social divisions that subsequently shook the world.
Based on a true story of two kids from Wales and East Germany whose friendship was forged in this epoch-defining division, the | exchange is pan-European coming-of-age romantic tragedy, set amidst the rise of Communism and a new Europe in the 1960s, where the collective double traumas of a continent ravaged by war and divided again by ideology are finally exposed and exorcised in the timeless crucible of sexual awakening and first love.
